Big-Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series & Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints return July 20

The season for motorsports in Ontario County has been a dry one for the most part, especially at Land Of Legends Raceway and its weekly array of ‘Saturday Spectaculars’ scheduled in 2021.
That was until Wednesday evening. And again Thursday morning.
LOLR Promoter Paul Cole was all set to stage the annual Independence Day holiday special until an afternoon downpour Wednesday and intermittent rainfall overnight into Thursday suddenly washed out his biggest show of the year to date.
“The rain that fell overnight and into the morning we probably could’ve handled with our pumps at the track, the bigger concern was the forecast of more this afternoon,” noted Cole, after the decision to postpone the dynamic dirt doubleheader was reached early Thursday morning in conjunction with Dean Reynolds, director of both SDS and ESS tours. “Some teams had to travel five or six hours to get here so we didn’t want to risk with the radar showing a 50/50 chance of another shower and a raindate already in place.”
Originally slated for July 1, Thursday’s ‘Super Spectacular’ presented by Honeoye Auto Parts & Emerson Oil Company/Castrol is now a terrific twin-bill on Tuesday with the Super DIRTcar Series for Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds and Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints returning to the fairgrounds on July 20.
“We were ready to water the track on Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 but a monsoon hit us around 2:30,” added Cole, now in his fourth year undertaking promotional responsibilities at the hallowed half-miler in the Finger Lakes Region. “More rain came down on and off in the AM and the track had water inside turn two and down the whole back straightaway. Pumping it out was something we had plans to take car of, but again any possibilities forced our hand. It was just rain at the wrong time, most frustrating when just a half-mile away the roads were virtually dry.”
Super DIRTcar Series ’21 now ventures to Western New York for round seven on Tuesday, July 6 when Ransomville Speedway hosts the ’36th Annual Summer Nationals.’ Through the first six SDS point shows, three-time race winner Stewart Friesen (885) leads seven-time SDS champion Matt Sheppard (846), ’19 defending champ Mat Williamson (817), second-generation standout Max McLaughlin (802) and veteran Billy Decker (797) in the standings.
ESS PJC Spray Foam CNY Speedweek resumes on Fri. July 2 when Brewerton Speedway stages round #3 of the now rain-shortened 4-race mini series. Special events at Fulton Speedway (July 3) and Weedsport Speedway (July 4) close out the 2021 edition with a points champion crowned for the eighth year.
Prior to Thursday’s postponement of the 37th Empire Super Sprint stop in Canandaigua, Jason Barney (428) topped the overall ESS standings followed by Paulie Colagiovanni (405), Dylan Swiernik (385), Jeff Cook (350), Davie Franek (346)
And after holding off Barney and Swiernik on Wednesday night at Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, Colagiovanni (127) leads Barney (117), Swiernik (111), Cook (105) and Kelly Hebing (100) in the chase for the overall Speedweek title.

While there will be no racing at the fairgrounds on July 3, the ‘Saturday Spectacular’ presented by Ferris Mowers on July 10 includes a traditional five star show plus a pair of make-up features from June 19. Both the Pepsi Big-Block Modified and Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling Street Stock classes will stage two main events, with a complete card of Speed Connection Sportsman, Mike Emhof Motorsports 305 Sprint and Lloyd’s Contracting Hobby Stock action filling the bill.
Promoter Paul recently added a new twist to the Big-Block portion of the show, scrapping heats while offering Twin 25s with the winner of race #1 drawing to determine how many finishers (10, 12 or 14) will be inverted to start the nightcap.
A Pallbearer’s Motorcycle Club Benefit raffle will be held during the night with practice sessions kicking off on-track activity at 5:30pm. Heat race qualifiers for all five divisions go green at 6:30pm with pit gates open at 3:30pm and spectators gaining admittance into the main grandstands at 5 o’clock.
