Coffey Collects $3,000 For Stunning Speedway Score In ‘Scoppo Special’
Murtaugh, Paddock, Minutolo, Kerrick & Ridley share LOLR winner’s circle rewards

A-Verdi Storage Containers and Smith Brothers Drywall presented a sensational ‘Saturday Spectacular’ at Land Of Legends Raceway with the ‘Scoppo Special’ for Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds on First Responders Night headlining the final big-six program of the month.
Second-generation standout Kasey Coffey outlasted ‘Money’ Mat Williamson in a battle royale covering the Big-Block ranks, matching first-time ‘26 feature winners Dillon Paddock (DisBatch Brewing Company 305 Sprint Car) and Parker Ridley (MighTea Boba New Legends Sportsman). Richard Murtaugh III (Stirling Lubricants Sportsman), Marc Minutolo (Proctor Enterprises Street Stock) and Daniel Kerrick (Smith Brothers Drywall Hobby Stock) joined them in a crowded Marine Blue Victory Lane to close out a warm August night of racing on the Ontario County Fairgrounds.
The 30-lap Modified main showcased another thrill show on the historic half-miler as Coffey first held off a mid-race bid by ‘Super’ Matt Sheppard before edging Canadian kingpin Williamson by a mere car-length to take the coveted Canandaigua checkers.
“Man, (win) means everything, this is really the only place we’ve been racing the last two years,” remarked Coffey, son of two-time Super DIRT Week 200 champion Vic Coffey and nephew of three-time LOLR points titlist Justin Haers after scoring his first career Big-Block win in memorable fashion. “This field is amazing on Saturday nights, it’s unreal.”
“You show up here every week and we can try to do as good as we can, and when you run 6th or 5th you’re like ‘ok, we had a pretty good night.’ These guys are really good,” understated the Caledonia chauffeur, only 18, after topping a stellar Big-Block field stacked with a handful of veteran Super DIRTcar Series stars that find success annually traveling regularly to tracks throughout the entire Northeast.
In sync with his local uncle’s own success found last week against the touring pros, outside pole-sitter Coffey charged past Zach Payne the second time around to begin the feature go. Justin Wright slipped by Payne with five laps scored as series stalwarts Sheppard, Peter Britten, Williamson and Jimmy Phelps joined the parade that also sandwiched Haers with Alex Payne in pursuit.
Sheppard stormed into second with 10 laps complete, pulling alongside Coffey on a lap 13 restart after Nick Root slowed to incur the lone caution period. Britten blasted from fifth to third back under green yet Zach Payne regained third soonafter, and halfway through Williamson improved to fifth ahead of Phelps and Alex Payne.
Sheppard caught Coffey by lap 20 while Williamson advanced to third with less than 10 laps to go. The lead trio pulled away from the pack as the final laps clicked off, Williamson edging Sheppard for second on lap 28 before nearly pulling off a last lap slidejob rounding turns one and two and falling just 0.34-sec. behind the potent #23c Carl Myers Enterprises-Phelps Cement Products/Bicknell entry at the stripe.
Continuing to keep alive the memory of the late long-time Canandaigua track official Mike Scoppo, wife Kathy Scoppo upped the ante by $1,500 for the front-5 finishers in the ‘Scoppo Special’ with Coffey collecting $3,000 ahead of Williamson ($1,500), Sheppard ($1,100), Alex Payne ($900) and Zach Payne ($750).
“Honestly, I was just hoping that we didn’t hit and he send me off turn two but once I knew we had him cleared I just knew I had to hit my mark going into turn three,” noted Coffey, already a four-time Sportsman race winner at LOLR, after becoming the 112th Modified winner since the 1953 season-opener. “Honestly, I didn’t even really know what lap we were on until the checkered flag. I looked up and saw two flags (double checkers) and I was like ‘oh wow.’ Tonight was our first night out on those new Bilstein Shocks so thanks to Eldon and Alex Payne, they gave the set-up for us. You never really expect to go and win the first night out with something new.”
Noted runner-up and current track points leader Williamson in the aftermath, “The top (lane) was definitely the place to be in (turns) one and two. It was kinda like ‘slide or die’ midget racing there at the end.” Added third-place Sheppard, “Just kinda battled steering all night, made some adjustments early but couldn’t steer as good as I needed to tonight.”
Falling into eighth on the starting grid to kick off the 25-lap Sportsman feature, Murtaugh needed all but the last half-mile to find his way back to Marine Blue Victory Lane for a third time this season steering his red hot no. 33 180 Flood Drive Properties-Predator Race Cars & Fabrication/Bicknell ride.
“Wow, what a race,” beamed Murtaugh, 24, now with seven top-5 finishes in 10 events to increase his division lead entering next Saturday’s final points show. “Can’t do a roof dance, got gear oil all over the car. Whoever that was broke in front of us, scared me when stuff went all over. But wow, what a track, what a race.”
New Legends graduates Brad Sawyer and Dylan Woodworth paced the 17-car field early with Murtaugh cracking the front-five with a handful of laps scored. Leader Sawyer suddenly dropped off the pace rounding turn four, pulling to the homestretch infield, incurring caution and relinquishing the top spot to Nick Cooper.
Murtaugh moved past Chris Darling when green lights returned, with a trio of #10 cars —Karl Comfort, Austin Germinio, Trevor Houghton— chasing the leaders in the first 10 laps. Defending track champion Comfort grabbed third by lap 20 as 16th starting Germinio took over fourth from Darling with five still left.
Traffic proved pivotal in the closing stages as Murtaugh finally caught up to Cooper on lap 23 before nosing ahead as chief starter Scott Hixson waved the white flag signaling just one to go. The last half-mile was good enough for the third-generation wheelman from Fulton as Murtaugh outdistanced Cooper by 0.85-sec. Germinio nipped Comfort for the third on the final circuit followed by Darling.
“I was just kinda going wherever the car would go,” said Murtaugh, who leads Cooper and Comfort heading down the stretch in his second full year as a Canandaigua regular. “Don’t even know who that was in third but they kept me on my toes there. Proud of all these (team/crew) guys, got an army here and a bunch of new sponsors on the car. Just have to thank everybody that makes this whole deal go.”
Matching Murtaugh’s winning move out of turn four with the white flag unfurling, Paddock pedaled the #27G The Shoe Leather Xpress-CS Collision & Mechanical/Maxim around Alysha Bay to score another dramatic win in the 20-lap 305 A-Main.
“Needed that last yellow (flag),” figured Paddock, after becoming the seventh winner in nine sprint car races this season at LOLR. “Knew that no .2 car (Randy Years) wasn’t gonna come off the top and no. 48 (Bay) wasn’t gonna come off the bottom so I knew if I could clear the #2 on the restart we could hopefully make some really consistent laps on top and chase down #48. And that’s just what we did.”
Pole-sitter Years and fourth starting Bay sandwiched two-time winner Lance Dusett at the start with Bay ducking under Years rounding turn two to take the top spot on lap four. The leaders increased their margin out front by the midway mark as Dusett, Darryl Ruggles, Ethan Gray and Dalton Martin searched for room to advance.
Gray went around in turn two to require a yellow flag on lap 12 and contact between Steve Glover and Mike Stelter on the ensuing restart forced another slowdown immediately after. The second try was a charm for Paddock as he blasted high to secure third from his previous position outside the top-5.
While running fourth after starting 12th, two-time winner Spencer Burley spun by himself maneuvering through turns three and four, and with no place to go Ruggles went over the berm to all but end his night. That final caution period shortened Paddock’s path to the front, with the Savannah standout disposing of runner-up Years on the lap 16 restart before blasting by Bay with just over a lap to go. Gray, points leader Bobby Parrow and Years completed the final front-five.
Mirroring some extra cash given to the top Big-Block drivers by Kathy Scoppo in further honor of Mike, Cobra Motorhomes & Coaches mainstay Chuck Hebing also contributed to the sprint winnings as the Empire Super Sprint Hall of Fame inductee and ‘25 Land of Legends Wall of Famer provided each of the Top-5 A-Main finishers with a $100 bonus.
“It’s been a struggle this year, that’s no secret, but this 305 stuff we figured it out and we’re there at the end,” commented Paddock, after adding his fourth career win at Canandaigua in just his third start of ‘26 on the fairgrounds oval. “Been clicking off the top-5s trying to get this motor to run a little bit better. Can’t thank Jay Greenfield (owner) and Hendershot Race Engines, we did get that thing running a little bit better in the feature. Had to work for it, started 13th, but man that was a lot of fun.”
Not many drivers are having more fun than weekend warrior Minutolo, winner of the 20-lap Street Stock feature for the third time this season aboard the 25B Honeoye Auto Parts-Real Estate By Jenn-Big Mike's Auto Chevrolet Camaro.
“It’s been an immaculate year,” declared Minutolo, after the Newark pilot posted his 83rd career stock car victory at LOLR to put him just seven behind all-time track winner Mike Welch. “It’s a career year, never won this many Street Stock races before in a year.”
Third starting Minutolo followed pole winner John Burritt through the gap to launch the 10-mile main with three-wide runners Rick Crego, C.J. Guererri and Jimmy Grant the top chasers. Turn two contact on lap six suddenly shuffled the deck with a bent Grant mount and smoking Mike Welch machine forced pitside with Welch unable to return.
Minutolo shadowed Burritt when the track was clean and ready for green, wasting little time moving out front on the lap seven restart as the lead duo crossed the line. While the second-generation leadfoot padded his lead halfway through, Guererri, Crego and Burritt ran three-wide dicing for position further back.
Guererri cut the deficit with five to go before Crego rallied to steal second on lap 18 as Minutolo clung low and put on the after-burners over the last mile. Collecting an additional $100 bonus from Prouty’s Bar after ending point leader Grant’s two-race win streak, ‘Mr. Smooth’ cruised home for a final half-dozen car-length victory followed by Crego, Guererri, Ely Mangiarelli and Burritt while the banged up Grant machine coasted to a sixth-place finish one lap down.
Unlike the weekend prior when eighth starting Kerrick inherited the lead after the frontrunners tangled on lap six, the Gorham driver took charge racing under green this Saturday, bolting from the last row to first in nine laps to score a convincing win in the 15-lap Hobby Stock shootout.
“The race was awesome, coming all the way from 17th I really didn’t think I was gonna win at all,” admitted Kerrick, in his customary under control low-key manner. “Then we got up to 6th or 5th, right around there, then up to fourth.”
“Then I’m like if I can roll with Bubba (Frank Burnell) and stay with him, I know I can get around Justin (Eldredge) and Marc (Minutolo). And I was able to and got right behind Bubba and was able to get by him (for the win),”
Kerrick’s evening began with a bang when an early turn four crash in his qualifying heat put any thoughts of a repeat win well beyond pit wall. Rapid work and replacement of vital parts — control arm, spindle, ball joint, etc.--- had his #61 Fratto Curbing-J.E. Marine Maintenance-Knapp & Schlappi Lumber Co. Chevrolet on line inside row nine just in time to take the initial green flag for the feature.
Craig Dingy led his first lap of the season yet after a lap two caution for a multi-car mishap in turn two, the Savannah driver suddenly pulled to the frontstretch infield where he remained parked for the night. Bubba Burnell inherited the lead while son Tyler Burnell, Blane Smith, Minutolo and Eldredge continued to jockey for position.
Kerrick cracked the top-five by lap five, then overtook Tyler Burnell for fourth on lap seven. Following a brief yellow flag on lap eight for Kevin Lloyd, Kerrick drop-kicked both Minutolo and Eldredge on the restart to place second, then needed only one more circuit to blow by Burnell high out of turn two.
Minutolo moved up to second on lap 10 while a pair of yellows on lap 14, the latter once again involving weekend rivals Bubba Burnell and Eldredge, sent scorers reeling as the last laps dragged on. Kerrick remained relentless enroute to his second win in just four events run at LOLR in ‘26, finishing three car-lengths ahead of points leader Minutolo, who wrapped up the Hobby division points crown at Outlaw Speedway in Dundee the night before, followed by Tyler Burnell, late-race charger Nate Peckham and Blane Smith.
“Had just about everything,” revealed Kerrick post-race when describing all the parts needed to get his car back on track just to take green. “We needed just one part and gotta thank Marc Minutolo for giving me a top A-Frame. He lended out a part for me and if it wasn’t for him I definitely wouldn’t be here in victory lane.”
“My dad always tells me you gotta be patient but it’s tough in a 15-lapper. Gotta push the envelope but at the same time not push it too hard. I thought I did a pretty good job of that tonight,” added Kerrick, on the heels of career win number 10 at LOLR.
The New Legends Sportsman season finale belonged to the youngest Ridley racer. While 11 year-old Parker led 11-¾ laps last week, the no. 11 Howie's Auto-Fratto Curbing-C&C Automotive Sales-M&B Auto/Bicknell ride stayed out front all 12 laps on this occasion to afford the Waterloo warrior his long-awaited climb atop the podium in wine country.
“This win means so much to me, worked so hard to get here but we’re finally here,” said Ridley, who joined last week’s winner Brianna Murtaugh and Aug. 1 victor Mitchell Hyde as the only drivers to contend in all nine New Legends features run this year. Ironically, Ridley, who did cop a heat race win in this his rookie season, is the second youngest division winner as 10-year old Preston Trautschold claimed four checkered flags in six appearances this summer.
“I didn’t even know where I was, just hoping I had a good lead and I could stay there. This time I learned not to get too excited, just send (car) in there and hope it will stick, and keep it consistent,” Ridley added.
Ridley out-dueled front row partner Trent Regan at the outset, needing less than five minutes to win the memorable caution-free affair, finishing a straightaway ahead of runner-up Elizabeth Nugent. Benny Wagner, Murtaugh and Regan completed the front-five with Hyde, Doug Dulen Jr. and Matt Scott running the entire six-mile distance.

Prouty’s Bar & Grill presents Season Championship Night for the Pepsi Big-Block Modified, Stirling Lubricants Sportsman, DisBatch Brewing Company 305 Sprint Car, Proctor Enterprises Street Stock and Smith Brothers. Drywall Hobby Stock divisions to close out the final regular weekend of racing at the fairgrounds on Sept. 5.
While Williamson and Alex Payne are front-runners in their quest for the coveted Big-Block points crown, Richard Murtaugh III is on the verge of capturing his first career DIRTcar Sportsman championship at the fairgrounds. Like Williamson, veteran wingman Bobby Parrow is also first in line for his third straight trophy in the Sprint Car ranks while Jimmy Grant has all but locked up his fourth Street Stock title. A third championship in the past four seasons for Marc Minutolo would give him six Hobby championships while defending champion Bubba Burnell has an outside chance of keeping the crown for a fourth year in Canandaigua.
Hot lap sessions kick off the championship program at 5:30pm and heat race qualifiers go green at 6:30pm. Pit gates open at 3:30pm and spectators gain admittance into the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds main grandstands at 5 o'clock.

The third installment to the Land Of Legends Wall of Fame this season will be made during the 8th Annual Gerald Haers Memorial Weekend when Charlie Donk is honored in a special pre-race ceremony on Friday, Sept. 18. One of nine drivers to score feature wins in three different classes at Canandaigua during a career that included full-fender, open-wheel and winged competition, Donk joins John & Scott Schrader in the celebrated Class of '26.
