Williamson Wears Canandaigua Big-Block Crown For Third Straight Season
First track title for Murtaugh while Parrow, Grant & Minutolo return atop 2026 point charts

Labor Day Weekend once again brought down the curtain on the regular season at Land Of Legends Raceway, with the Sept. 5 short-track program presented by Prouty's Bar & Grill recognizing a handful of deserving points champions.
There was no shortage of drama in the latest 'Saturday Spectacular' chronicled on Canandaigua’s historic half-miler as all five divisions showcased the speedway’s best in open-wheel and full-fender competition.
Despite four inches of rain soaking the Ontario County Fairgrounds mid-week, the grounds crew did a yeoman’s job preparing ultra-fast track conditions come feature time. While all five feature winners obviously found the racey surface to their liking, not one of the eventual point champs could muster a top-5 finish as a pair of sixth-place tallies and three seventh-place scores were their end results.
After finding the fastest way around the storied half-miler in recent weeks, Zach Payne scored his first Pepsi Big-Block Modified feature win of ‘26 while Mat Williamson (finished 6th) garnered his third straight season championship. Richard Murtaugh III also placed sixth behind winner Karl Comfort in the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman Modified main, copping a first-ever title in just his second full season of competition in Canandaigua.
Bobby Parrow (finished 7th) also matched Williamson with a third successive championship in the DisBatch Brewing Company 305 Sprint Car A-Main with Spencer Burley logging his division-high third triumph. Seventh-place finishes were also good enough for Jimmy Grant (Proctor Enterprises Street Stock) and Marc Minutolo (Smith Brothers Drywall Hobby Stock) to capture 2026 titles although C.J. Guererri (Street) and Daniel Kerrick (Hobby) collected checkered flags in convincing fashion.
Justin Haers was the last driver to earn three straight (2021-23) Big-Block titles while going back to the second season of 305 action at LOLR, Darryl Ruggles collected three consecutive (2013-15) track crowns circling the Canandaigua clay.
While Payne won the battle in the final regular season 'Saturday Spectacular,” Canadian chauffeur Williamson once again came out on top in the weekly wars that continued to highlight some of the best Big-Block teams in the entire Northeast.
“Super cool (to win another title), can’t thank enough all the guys that come down the road every week,” noted Williamson, 36, who needed a finish of 8th-place or better to retain the crown behind the wheel of his potent no. 6 S&W Service Centre-Marin Drywall-Becker Bros.Trucking/Bicknell entry. “They work hard in the shop and we get in the truck at 1:30 on Saturdays, come out here and don’t get back (St. Catharines, Ont.) til midnight.”
“Its a really cool place to win a championship at just because there’s a lot of good race car drivers here every Saturday night. There’s 16 cars in the pit area tonight and probably 14 that have won series races so it says a lot about what Paul (Cole, LOLR promoter) has going on here. He pays a lot of money for weekly Big-Block racing and it’s all appreciated from a driver’s standpoint,” added Williamson, who ended the regular season with two feature wins, besting Alex Payne, 553-537, in the final points standings followed by Matt Sheppard (507) and Haers (503).
Pole-sitter Gil Tegg Jr. led early in the 30-lap Modified main before Peter Britten suffered a flat tire to incur caution on lap six. Justin Wright overtook Tegg on the ensuing restart with sixth-place starter Zach Payne rolling into third.
Payne improved to second at the midway mark followed by Nick Root with championship contenders Alex Payne advancing to fourth while Williamson was mired in eighth behind Tegg, Jimmy Phelps and Sheppard. Zach Payne grabbed the lead on lap 20 before Wright slowed to require a second yellow flag on lap 23.
Top-10 runner Kasey Coffey broke rounding turns one to force the final slowdown with a handful of laps to go yet Payne was up to the challenge in his Kevlar-powered no. 7Z MP Delivery-Proctor Enterprises-DIG Race Products/Bicknell machine, pulling away for a comfortable half-dozen car-length win over Root. Hard-charging Phelps filled the podium followed by Alex Payne, Sheppard and Williamson.
“We’ve been fast all year, had a good car no matter what the race conditions here each week,” remarked Payne, emerging as the ninth different Big-Block winner in 11 events, the Stanley driver himself now a two-time winner after first reaching Marine Blue Victory Lane at LOLR in July of 2023. “With the rain all week this place had a little character and we made the right adjustments. Found a line that worked and at the end I kinda searched around a little bit there to find something a little bit better.”
“The competition here is second to none. I figured some guy is going to be right on my bumper there at the end with there being a couple cautions but it all worked out. Happy we finally got (win) in the last race of the season,” added Payne, who matched last year’s position of sixth on the final points chart.
For the third time this season, three-time and defending season champ Comfort parked his #10 Steve General Contractor-Millco Woodworking-Honeoye Auto Parts/Bicknell mount in the winner’s circle yet it was Murtaugh taking the title. The 24 year-old Fulton driver needed to finish 21st or better to clinch the elusive crown and rallied from 17th starting spot, out-gaining Comfort, 534-504, in the final points tally.
Winner of the ‘Great Lakes 75’ during Super DIRT Week last October at Oswego Speedway, Murtaugh ended the Canandaigua campaign with three triumphs piloting his prized no. 33 180 Flood Drive Properties-Predator Race Cars & Fabrication/Bicknell ride.
“Guys worked hard and this is definitely a good way to finish off the season, probably got maybe just one more Sportsman race here then we’re gonna go Big-Block,” divulged Comfort, who plans to pull double-duty in the upcoming Haers Memorial, contending in both Big-Block Modified and Sportsman title events on Sept. 19. “So this is it man, for victory lane in Sportsman, one more shot here.”
Traveling weekly all the way from Little Meadows, Pa., track rookie Michael Lupold led the initial 10 circuits of the 25-lap Sportsman feature before relinquishing the point to New Legends graduate Dylan Woodworth. After open-wheel upstart Chris Darling dropped off the pace to bring out caution on lap 13, veteran Kevin Ridley blasted from third to first on the ensuing restart.
Ridley’s advantage was short-lived however when Woodworth had a tire go down and the Waterloo warrior was penalized two spots under yellow for excessive contact in his move to the front on that restart just one lap earlier. Comfort inherited the lead and after a turn one pile-up involving Tim Baker, Jim Rushman, Jon Almekinder and Lupold, the Penn Yan pilot was chased by Matt Guererri, Ridley, Tyler Guzzardi and Evan Nugent when green lights returned on lap 14.
Ridley rebounded with a pass of Guererri with five laps to go yet his late-race bid fell eight car-lengths short at the stripe. Following a highly vocal post-race disagreement with track officials regarding his mid-race penalty, runner-up Ridley was disqualified for unsportsman-like conduct, moving up Guererri, Nugent, Frank Guererri Jr., Trevor Houghton and new track champ Murtaugh in the final finishing order.
“Car was pretty good, Ridley is always fast and he showed me the line when he kinda got by me there before the caution,” stated Comfort, now with 29 career Sportsman triumphs in Canandaigua which ranks fourth all-time. “So thought I gotta come down a little bit lower in (turns) three and four then I’ll be fast. The car is mint, it’s just the driver trying to do a good job.”
It’s uncommon to earn a season title without scoring a feature win and even more rare to finish atop the points standings without leading a single lap, especially if you’re the two-time defending champion. Despite reluctantly checking off both boxes, Parrow couldn’t complain as the veteran wingman from Waterloo still took home the highest accolade for a third straight year.
“It’s been a tough year, all we’ve been is consistent,” summed up Parrow, still as consistent as ever at age 58, logging four front-five finishes in nine events aboard his familiar orange no. 80 Shuttleworth Epoxy Floors-Seneca Meadows-Young Food Auctions-Proctor Enterprises/Shaw sprinter with a home-built powerplant under the hood. Already a 17-time 305 Sprint Car winner at the fairgrounds, Parrow equalled 2023 Big-Block champ Haers with no wins and no laps led although he did win two qualifying heats compared to only one for Haers. “We’ve gotta work on set-ups.”
“But mainly I wanted this (championship) for my mom and dad, both passed away in May (one week apart). This is all for them, they were my biggest supporters since I started in racing. Wish we could’ve won a couple. We’ll get ‘em next year, got some work to do.”
“If (titles) were easy everybody would be getting one. I’m very proud to get another championship, no doubt about it, just hope we can get a win by the end of the year. First year I ever ran a full season without a win so it’s a tough pill to swallow,” admitted Parrow, who also won an Empire Super Sprint A-Main at Canandaigua in August of 1992.
While Parrow disclosed his disappointment from not reaching victory lane this season, for the second straight week the 20-lap A-Main proved heart-breaking for the Ruggles family. Burley slid under Darryl Ruggles with only a quarter-mile to go on Saturday while daughter Alysha Bay fell victim to winner Dillon Paddock with just one lap remaining in last weekend’s 305 thriller.
“Had to work for this one, that’s for sure,” down-played Burley, the second-generation Spencerport sensation who finished second to Parrow in the track standings, 460-422, despite missing a point show while competing out of town. “Track was really fast tonight, had to really drive the wheels off it.”
Yet the #15B Elab Smokers Boutique-Mohawk NE-Moose Joose Slush-Mad Skins/Mach1 machine produced plenty of speed in every corner, carrying Burley from ninth to second in 16 laps then erasing a 2.6-second deficit with a bold final lap maneuver that dropped Canandaigua’s all-time sprint winner to second at the line.
Front row partners Ruggles and Randy Years pulled away from the pack as soon as chief starter Scott Hixson dropped the opening green flag. Sliding high rounding turns one and two, Years got out of shape and suddenly veered to the backstretch infield where he slammed into the waiting jersey barrier. No injuries were sustained by the dejected driver although his disfigured sprinter was cautiously cradled back to the pits during the red flag situation.
Green lights reappeared for the lap eight restart with Ruggles leading Dalton Martin and Ethan Gray while Burley ran seventh in the early going as Parrow stayed steady filling his rear-view. Burley cracked the top-five midway through, soonafter darting past Cameron Moss on lap 11, grabbing third from Gray three circuits later, then overtaking Martin for second two miles from the end.
But that was just the beginning of Burley’s latest charge to the front, lap after lap slicing into the once insurmountable gap built up by seasoned hotshoe Ruggles. The white flag flew and Burley wasted no time ducking low as the lead pair entered turn one, pulling alongside Ruggles between the corners before out-dragging the “motorized madman” down the back straight in the last lap showdown. A final slide job through turn four cemented the last lap theft although the margin was a mere 0.186sec. under the checkers with Martin, Gray and Kyle Drum crossing next.
“Was really hard with Ruggles, being pretty good in his heat race I knew I had to make quick work,” figured Burley, son of Todd, the former Mr. DIRT Sportsman champion and Modified mainstay at the fairgrounds. “Just kept digging the whole way. Had him down coming out of turn two and sealed the deal down the backstretch, so can’t do better than that, right?”
“I didn’t think I was gonna catch him but as soon as I broke free there I thought ‘hey, I might have a shot at this one’ so I just kept driving as hard as I could and hit my marks every lap. Only counts if you lead the last lap, right,” smiled Burley, currently 15th in the ‘26 CRSA Series points standings despite competing at only half the initial 13 tour stops.
Similar to Parrow’s final night chasing points in Canandaigua, Grant seemingly just had to take the opening green flag and from there cruise on home to his fourth LOLR Street Stock championship in the past six years. His latest title, however, was the closest yet after two season-ending slugfests kept his no. 36 Geneva Glass-Proctor Roofing-Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating-J.E. Marine Chevrolet Camaro out of the front-five in the final feature race finishing orders.
“Just lucky to be here after all we’ve gone through with the breaking up of the cars and all the other drama,” said a more relieved Grant, 40, who also captured point crowns in 2021, ‘23 and ‘24. The Penn Yan racer registered four feature wins in nine starts this time around. “We’re happy and humble and hope to come back next year.”
“We were really good before that last restart, running down Ely (Mangiarelli) and C.J. there. Got jumbled up on that start, was just one of those racing deals where people were pushing and shoving. I lost some parts and broke something in the steering. Just hung on after that,” added Grant, who ranks seventh all-time at LOLR with 39 stock car wins.
Grant’s misfortune was good news for Guererri as the Geneva wheelman’s second win of ‘26 solidified his runner-up place in points by a count of 488-482. The reigning division points king had his red no. CJ1 Heart of Gold Veterinary Care-Stanley Ag-Springer Maintenance Consulting Chevrolet Camaro entry on rails from the start, charging past Mangiarelli on lap three and holding on the final 17 laps to reach Marine Blue Victory Lane for the 21st time in his colorful Canandaigua career.
“I didn’t care about the points, they were irrelevant. I won the championship last year, was just out to complete the whole season for my old man and I did it,” proclaimed Guererri, in an emotional winner’s circle address. “This race is for my mom, she’s been my rock from day one since my dad passed.”
After Guererri wrestled away the lead from Mangiarelli on lap three, the first of three yellow flags flew when mechanical issues sidelined Marc Minutolo pitside for the remainder with six circuits down. Back under green, contact involving Grant sent him into the pits as his trackside debris brought out more caution immediately after.
Guererri maintained a solid lead halfway through the 10-mile feature with Mangiarelli and Crego the closest competitors as Doug Webster, Mike Welch, Rich Conte and Grantt jockeyed for position further back. A turn four spin by John Burritt on lap 19 only served to tighten the pack briefly, affording Mangiarelli to finish two car-lengths behind Guererri under the checkers followed across the line by Conte, Crego, Welch, Mike Fellows and Grant, who coasted home missing a nose piece for more than half the race.
“Ely’s a real good racer so when he poked his nose down there I did get a little nervous,” admitted Guererri, who for the third straight season claimied the feature on Championship Night. “The kid tries like hell and he’s definitely due, but tonight wasn’t the night.”
In an untimely turn of events during the week resulting in Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell and Justin Eldredge being suspended for separate pitside rulebook infractions last Saturday, Minutolo locked up the championship even before the first green flag fell.
“Its been a career year, won 14 races and six here at Canandaigua,” remarked Minutolo, now 34, with the Newark driver already owning seven track titles taken since 2007 and 83 full-fender feature wins chronicled in Canandaigua along the way. “Even though you got (title) wrapped up you kinda want to put an exclamation point on the season and go for the win. Just didn’t work out that way.”
Reaching third with seven circuits scored in the 15-lap Hobby Stock finale, Minutolo’s shot at a fourth division win came to an end with six to go when his #25B Big Mike's Auto Repair-Real Estate By Jenn-Tradition Automotive Chevrolet Monte Carlo limped pitside with another flat tire.
Bringing out an opening lap caution period when his own #61 Fratto Curbing-J.E. Marine Maintenance-Knapp & Schlappi Lumber Co. Chevrolet Monte Carlo was forced over the berm through turns three and four, Daniel Kerrick advanced quickly through the field, taking over fourth-place after Minutolo’s mishap. Kerrick continued his relentless run, passing Tyler Burnell for third on lap 11 and disposing of runner-up Jared Hill on 13 before ultimately inheriting the top spot when race-long leader Nate Peckham had a tire go down with just over one lap to go.
En route to his third consecutive win, Kerrick’s lead ballooned to more than half a straightaway under Hixson’s double checkers keeping the $100 Prouty’s Bonus intact as the regular season came to a close. Hill, Burnell, Mike Charette and Rick Crego, buckled into Bubba Burnell’s vacant ride, rounded out the top-five while Peckham hobbled home to settle for sixth ahead of Minutolo who managed seventh to secure the coveted points crown.
“Had a good car towards the end of the race and we were rolling but it still would’ve been hard to catch Nate under green for sure,” added Minutolo, posting three wins in nine races this year and now sits seven victories shy of Canandaigua’s all-time stock car win leader Mike Welch. “Love this class and advocating for its future. Great challenge coming back again every year. Keeping the class alive is the biggest motivation, kinda trickled down from my dad. Like to help the new guys starting out, hopefully keep this division growing.”

Following next weekend off at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, short-track action at Land Of Legends Raceway returns for the final time in 2026 as the eighth annual edition of the Gerald Haers Memorial presented by Phelps Cement Products and Rushco moves to the forefront. With over $70,000 in cash purses plus thousands more in lap leader and contingency awards on the line, fans will once again be treated to two days of paint-trading, wheel-to-wheel competition showcasing many of the best teams today in the premier open-wheel, full-fender and wing divisions.

The Proctor Enterprises Street Stock event, once again held in tribute to the late LOLR Pro Stock champion and driver of the sleek Top Gun #1 machine, Les Whyte, is expected to attract another quality field including recently crowned Canandaigua points kings Jimmy Grant, who is also a two-time and defending TGOS race winner, and Marc Minutolo, who finished second to Grant last September.
Boasting $1,000 just to start the 100-lap finale, a lucrative $10,000 top prize is at stake as the Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds take center stage on night two Sat. Sept. 19. In a crowd-pleasing performance, Justin Haers took the lion’s share back home to Phelps last year in the latest history-making century grind that provides a base purse in excess of $43,000 for the single-day, one-race speedfest, once more making this a can’t miss event for fans and drivers alike touring the Finger Lakes Region.
Complementing their Big-Block brethren, a Northeast Fall Championship Series event for Stirling Lubricants Sportsman completes this dynamic DIRTcar doubleheader with the 30-lap feature winner pocketing $2,000 plus thousands more in cash and contingencies shared among all 30 qualifiers. Canadian hotshoe Cody McPherson (Spt) grabbed the spotlight in last year’s title race run following his first-ever win at the fairgrounds.

McCREADIE JOINS DONK ON WALL OF FAME DURING GHM WEEKEND
The fourth and final addition to the Land Of Legends Wall of Fame this season will be made during the 8th Annual Gerald Haers Memorial Weekend when Tim McCreadie is honored in a special pre-race ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Watertown wheelman followed in the tire tracks of his late father ‘Barefoot Bob’ McCreadie, scoring more than a dozen Big-Block Modified wins at the fairgrounds as well as a World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main on his former Saturday night home soil. ‘T-Mac’ joins Friday night inductee Charlie Donk and John & Scott Schrader in the celebrated Class of '26 in Canandaigua.
