Haers Powers To 2nd Big-Block Win Of ‘26 In Fast Paced Fairgrounds Show
Burley, Guererri, Grant, Kerrick & Murtaugh take track checkers in latest LOLR thrill rides
Canandaigua, NY – August 22, 2026 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR
Seneca Meadows Landfill and the Ontario County Fairboard presented a super fast ‘Saturday Spectacular’ at Land Of Legends Raceway, starting the show an hour early with the final checkered flag falling well before skies ever opened up as the evening forecast failed to come to fruition.
Practice makes perfect yet on this night the predicted rainfall prompted LOLR Promoter Paul Cole to scrap pre-race warm-ups and kick off right away with qualifying heats taking the first green flag at 5:30pm.
The lack of hot laps had little effect on the feature race results, especially repeat winners Justin Haers, Spencer Burley and Jimmy Grant, each heading home with another checkered flag clenched tightly in hand. That trio was accompanied by Frank Guererri Jr., Daniel Kerrick and Brianna Murtaugh, all reaching Marine Blue Victory Lane at the Ontario County Fairgrounds for the first time this season.
Three-time division points king Haers held off a late-race charge by current leader Mat Williamson to score his second 30-lap Pepsi Big-Block Modified win of the ‘26 campaign while Burley matched his opening night triumph in the 20-lap DisBatch Brewing Company 305 Sprint Car A-Main. Grant continued to dominate the Proctor Enterprises Street Stock ranks, netting his fourth 20-lap victory in seven starts.
Veteran Guererri had to fend off division high-point man Richard Murtaugh III in the 25-lap Stirling Lubricants Sportsman nail-biter to return to the winner’s circle after a four-year hiatus while Kerrick took advantage of contact among the frontrunners enroute to his first win in the 15-lap Smith Brothers Drywall Hobby Stock feature since last September’s Gerald Haers Memorial.
Finally breaking out of the shadow of older brother Richard, Brianna staged a dramatic last turn, last lap pass to win the 12-lap MighTea Boba New Legends Sportsman finale and forever etch her name in the Land of Legends record book.
Spearheaded by LOLR Race Director Greg Hixson and his wife Dawn, VIP Tower Suite Hostess, in partnership with the speedway’s Mac's Dairy Bar Kids Club, more than 100 backpacks filled with school supplies were given away to children in attendance Saturday evening. Once again exhibiting the track’s influence on the surrounding community, donations continued to be provided by local companies as well as many of the competing race teams that call Canandaigua their weekend home throughout the summer months.
The mighty Mod Squad returned to the fairgrounds fresh off the Super DIRTcar Series showdown on Tuesday, and with the calibre of drivers comprising the starting field it seemed like another tour stop for the region’s best in the Big-Block business.
Making his sixth start in nine events, open-wheel veteran Gil Tegg Jr. did his best to keep the area all-stars at bay, yet the pole-sitter finally gave way to 9th-starting Haers on lap 22 and fell victim to the onslaught in the closing stages.
“Happy birthday to my son Jonathan, he turned 11 today,” beamed the proud father after Haers matched his last climb atop center stage July 11, on that night out-distancing Matt Sheppard and Williamson for the popular victory. “He told me earlier today ‘if you don’t finish on the podium you’re in trouble dad’ so we got her to victory lane.”
So far plagued by mechanical issues in his familiar no. 22G A&G Food Service-Research Financial Group/Bicknell ride throughout the rain-shortened season, Tegg charged ahead in the early going as the track’s top dogs loomed in the distance. With a half-dozen laps down, Nick Root was the closest contender followed by Australian ace Peter Britten, Haers and second-generation wheelman Zach Payne.
Haers moved into third on lap eight and by the midway mark had secured second followed by Root, Britten and Williamson with Payne, Alex Payne and Jimmy Phelps locked into chase mode circling the smooth, dust-free half-miler. Behind the wheel of the no. 3RS Transport Sales & Service-Slack Racing/Bicknell mount on this night, Matt Sheppard joined the parade ahead of Dylan Zacharias and Kasey Coffey.
Lap after lap Haers dug into the deficit during the 10-minute caution-free affair, finally finding his way under Tegg as the lead pair sped down the back chute on lap 22. From there the #3 Honeoye Auto Parts-Phelps Cement Products-CX Electric-FLX Home Solutions/Bicknell machine ran uncontested despite Williamson cutting the gap to 1.2-sec. under chief starter Scott Hixson’s double checkered flags. The Paynes, Zach and Alex, and second-generation driver Root rounded out the top-5 with Super DIRTcar Series stalwarts Britten, Sheppard and Phelps dropping Tegg to ninth in the final outcome.
“Was trying to bide my time, save my tires and just hit my marks,” remarked Haers, after shadowing Tegg for nearly 10 laps before authoring the winning move. “It was a very fine line on the bottom. The first couple laps I hit it really good and got by a bunch of cars. The car was just phenomenal.”
“We’ve been working pretty hard to get ready for these big year-end events and I can’t wait for my dad’s race (Gerald Haers Memorial, Sept. 19) coming up in a month or so. We’re super excited and want to finish out the year strong here. Two wins out of the last three (Saturday) times here I can’t complain,” added the defending GHM Modified champion after registering Big-Block win number 24 at the fairgrounds.
While ‘T-Bone’ also cracked the winner’s circle twice last season, Guererri was a two-time DIRTcar Sportsman victor yet that was back in 2022. His fifth front-five finish in nine events this year was easily the most satisfying, outlasting points leader Murtaugh to triumph by a narrow two car-length margin at the wire.
“It’s about time man, we work as hard as anybody else if not harder,” declared Guererri, now 40, who logged his first win on the Canandaigua clay in a 2004 Pro Stock feature. “These (wins), they aren’t coming in packs so it feels good to be back here.”
Filing into third on the 18-car starting grid, Guererri mirrored every move of early pace-setter Trevor Houghton until charging past underneath as the lead pair navigated through turn four. The Seneca Falls chauffeur built up a commanding lead midway through with track rookie Houghton holding off dialed in drivers Nick Cooper and Murtaugh, as well as multi-time winners Karl Comfort and Kevin Ridley.
Guererri’s straightaway advantage was suddenly erased when recent New Legends graduate Sydney Wetherbee suffered a flat right-rear tire on lap 17, with the slowdown putting Murtaugh right on the bumper of the red no. 113jr. Lyons Engineering-NG Promotions-Carlson Painting & Cleaning-ImageX/Bicknell car for the final restart.
Guererri hugged the inside rail back under green while Murtaugh ran his hardest searching for bite up top as the last laps dwindled. And that’s the way they finished in front of Ridley who rallied to place third while Comfort edged Tuesday night winner Matt Guererri by 3/1000-sec. in the final rundown.
“I knew somebody was gonna have to have a really special race car to go around me,” figured Guererri, lost amidst the growing crowd of friends and family in victory lane. “I just had to keep on doing what I was doing, the car was really good. If I didn’t drive it in (corners) hard enough I got a little tight but I knew somebody was gonna have to be really good to go around me. I seen somebody out there but I couldn’t tell who it was. I made this (car) as wide as I possibly could, used up every inch the last four or five laps. The bottom (groove) around this place, when it’s slick that’s my cup of tea,” added Guererri, who rattled off his list of loyal team supporters while acknowledging his father Frank Sr, himself a five-time Street Stock winner at LOLR in the late 1990s, who was tuning in from Strong Memorial Hospital.
Second-generation speedster Burley was the class of the sprint car field after frontrunners John Smith and Darryl Ruggles dropped out, outlasting still winless Bobby Parrow to cross the line first in the 10-mile A-Main.
“I got real aggressive on the initial start,” stated Burley, whose father Todd owns trophies in both Modified and Sportsman divisions at LOLR while uncle Chris Burley copped a couple Sportsman wins in Canandaigua. “ I knew track position was gonna be very valuable tonight being very slick and hard to pass so I got pretty aggressive there in the first three laps going from eighth to third.”
Still in search of his first winged win, pole-sitter Smith jumped out to the early lead ahead of the 18-car field. In a bold three-wide maneuver across the line to complete the second circuit, fourth starting Ruggles stole the runner-up spot from his daughter Alysha Bay and Mike Stelter while high-flying Burley bolted into the top-5.
A two-time winner this season, Lance Dusett was involved in a turn 1-2 tangle with Dan Bennett to incur caution on lap four with the front-five remaining intact back under green. Burley chased Smith and Ruggles on the restart then pulled his potent #15B Elab Smokers Boutique-Mohawk Northeast sprinter into second the sixth time around just before yellow lights flashed when leader Smith slid high over the banking exiting turn one. The result of a possible blown head gasket, Ruggles suddenly ducked pitside as well, affording Parrow second while Bay, Dalton Martin and Stelter were scored next.
A minor mishap mid-race for the spinning machine of newcomer C.J. Jones was all that could slow Burley the rest of the way as a clear track ahead played to his advantage. Parrow cut the once 20 car-length lead in half down the stretch, yet still not enough to catch Burley while Stelter, fast-closing Matt Rotz and Bay finished next. Martin crossed the line sixth yet was disqualified after his car came up light on the scales in the customary post-race inspection.
“I know we were rolling pretty good, just had to take my time and think things through because I put in a lot of work to pick up position early,” Burley noted.
Grant’s 39th career stock car win at Canandaigua was just as convincing as that of Burley, with the Penn Yan pilot now further ahead in line for his fourth career Street Stock points title at the fairgrounds.
“We’re blessed every time we come here,” said Grant, who professed to trackside interviewer Adam DelGrosso that he would win the remaining races on the 2026 LOLR schedule. “I made a bold move, knew I had to get out front before the other fast cars did and get into a rhythm because I knew it’s hard to catch ‘em. Either it was gonna stick or end up in the swamp over there but either way I was happy with it. The car worked really well.”
All-time Canandaigua full-fender winner Mike Welch led the opening circuit yet was the meat in the sandwich on lap two when Rick Crego ducked low and Grant went high as the trio traded paint racing through turn two. Crego’s advantage lasted less than a mile as Grant nosed ahead by a bumper to forge the last lead change with three laps in the scorebook.
Crego gave a valiant effort for a few more laps yet Grant’s no. 36 Geneva Glass-Proctor Roofing-Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating-J.E. Marine Chevrolet Camaro was not to be denied, clinging to a 10 car-length margin as the checkered flag waved. Starting last on the grid, Marc Minutolo overtook Crego for second while Ely Mangiarelli and C.J. Guererri filled out the front-five ahead of Welch.
“Down there (track) was just bottom, there was a water hole there that upset the car just a little bit but if you backed the corner way up and waited for traction …,” Grant added. “Down the back stretch, probably halfway down the straightaway I could actually touch it off but it made for a driver’s race track. Not just a turn left, hammer down deal. Technical on both ends so I’m really happy with it.”
While Grant has contended in all seven Street Stock events, Hobby Stock victor Kerrick has run only three shows this summer yet the result was still the same.
“We haven’t had real good luck here that’s why we kinda haven’t been back,” admitted Kerrick, 24, now with nine feature wins at the fairgrounds over the last four years. “Marc (Minutolo) and Bub (Frank Burnell) are so good here. We know they’re the guys to beat and you got a lot of competition so it’s pretty cool to win here.”
Justin Eldredge blasted from fourth to first in three-wide fashion to kick off the feature with Tyler Burnell nearly as quick following him from his fifth-place start. Back-to-back lap five cautions jumbled the pack putting Frank Burnell alongside Eldredge on the second restart as Kerrick, Tyler Burnell and Minutolo made their way around the ever-slickening half-miler.
When Frank Burnell tapped the back of Eldredge between turns three and four, the contact turned Eldredge’s ride around to send the trailing pack scrambling for position in the aftermath. Eldredge returned after a brief stop pitside although Burnell was penalized to the rear of the field as Kerrick inherited the lead on lap six without making a pass.
While Kerrick cruised on home for a comfortable 15 car-length victory steering his #61 Fratto Curbing-J.E. Marine Maintenance-Knapp & Schlappi Lumber Co. Chevrolet, Minutolo finished second ahead of Tyler Burnell and Nate Peckham. Fifth finishing Frank Burnell went on a rampage in the closing stages while Eldredge rebounded for sixth-place at the stripe.
“Get a lot of help from Jimmy Grant and Justin Haers, and they both won tonight,” remarked Kerrick, himself a third-generation racer from Gorham. “First and foremost have to thank my dad and brother, they’re in the shop with me all week long helping get this (car) ready. Couldn’t do all this without them.”
The second woman to grace Marine Blue Victory Lane this season, Brianna continued the Murtaugh family tradition finding her own winning way around the historic half-mile oval in Ontario County scooting under race-long leader Parker Ridley with just an eighth of a mile to go in the New Legends curtain-closer.
“A lot of this is just showing patience, especially on a track like this,” said Murtaugh, 22, referring to the surface conditions that put a premium on car set-up and driver adaptability. “My heart goes out to Parker, he’s a good little kid, his time is coming.”
Joining boyfriend and Aug. 1 winner Mitchell Hyde and Ridley as the only drivers to compete in all eight New Legends main events this season, fifth-starting Murtaugh moved in to threaten outside pole-sitter Ridley by lap three and chased him for nearly the entire six-mile distance. The lone yellow flag flew halfway through with Ridley, half as old as Murtaugh at age 11, fending off every challenge for 11-¾ laps.
The last corner and last couple hundred yards were all that ultimately mattered though as Fulton’s fastest female sped ahead in her #33B Flood Drive Properties-Predator Fabrication-Premier Racing Setups/Bicknell entry to write the final chapter on a night when Mother Nature finally cooperated.
“That was an awesome race, an awesome end to a good race,” smiled Murtaugh, after joining in LOLR’s win column sibling Richard, himself on the brink of capturing Canandaigua’s coveted regular Sportsman division crown. “Have to thank my family and brother for getting this car in top condition for me. And there’s a lot more people to thank for helping make all this happen.”

With just two more point shows remaining on the 2026 speedway schedule, A-Verdi Storage Containers and Smith Brothers Drywall present the last ‘Saturday Spectacular’ of the month with the ground-pounding Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds headlining the race card on Aug. 29 that includes Stirling Lubricants Sportsman, DisBatch Brewing Company 305 Sprint Car, Proctor Enterprises Street Stock and Smith Bros. Drywall Hobby Stock action with MighTea Boba New Legends Sportsman drivers contending in their own season-finale. Pit gates open at 3:30pm and spectator gates are unlocked at 5 o'clock with hot laps starting at 5:30 followed by heat race qualifiers at 6:30.
Continuing to keep alive the memory of the late long-time Canandaigua track official Mike Scoppo, wife Kathy Scoppo has upped the ante by $1,500 for the front-5 finishers in the 30-lap ‘Scoppo Special’ Big-Block finale with the winner pocketing $3,000, 2nd-place $1,500, 3rd-$1,100, 4th-$900 and 5th-$750. The first qualifier goes green at 6:30pm, pit gates open at 3:30pm, spectators gain entrance at 5 o'clock and hot laps start at 5:30 on the fast fairgrounds half-miler.
TALKING POINTS
The final point races of 2026 are slated for Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 with six more Land Of Legends Raceway champions soon to be crowned.
The closest battle remains in the Pepsi Big-Block Modified ranks with Williamson leading Alex Paine by a count of 442-433 and Haers holding strong at 420. In the other open-wheel classes, Sportsman standout Richard Murtaugh leads Frank Guererri, 423-390, while winged warriors Parrow (366) and Burley 332) sit one-two heading down the stretch. On the full-fender docket, Grant (398) and Minutolo (360) top the Street Stock standings and Minutolo (400) heads the Hobby Stock points chart over chief rival Frank Burnell (376).
