Williamson Caps Off Championship Season With 2nd Haers Memorial Win
Comfort closes out Canandaigua Sportsman career with flag-to-flag GHM triumph
Canandaigua, NY – September 19, 2026 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR
With over $75.000 in cash and contingencies on the line in the 8th running of the Gerald Haers Memorial presented by Phelps Cement Products, Rushco and VP Racing Fuels, Mat Williamson and Karl Comfort ended the 2026 season at Land Of Legends Raceway just like it began.
The opening day winners turned the season-finale into another ‘Saturday Spectacular’ with Williamson capturing ‘The Gerald’ for Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds and Comfort claiming the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman GHM Classic in Canandaigua’s biggest event of the year.
Williamson’s third trip to Marine Blue Victory Lane in ‘26 rewarded him with a first-place prize of $10,000 while Comfort, the eighth different winner in as many GHM Sportsman shows, collected $2,000 following his fourth triumph since May.
“Thanks, first and foremost to the entire Haers family, they do such a good job honoring Gerald,” remarked Williamson, who hoisted his first Haers Memorial trophy in 2024. “He was a great man. Got to hang out with him quite a bit and me and Justin (Haers, son) hung out a lot. He always had a good story so to honor him like this is pretty special.”
Numerous members of the Haers clan showed up in full force for the eighth edition, once again celebrating the legacy left behind by the true family patriarch. Haers was a long-time mentor and supporter of Land of Legends and its race teams, a Vietnam War Veteran, as well as husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many more, enjoying a lifetime of contributions to area auto racing. He passed away at age 74 on July 15, 2019.
A fine field of 41 Modifieds signed in pitside on Saturday while a near-record 52 DIRTcar Sportsman further jammed the Ontario County Fairgrounds as the 63rd season of motorsports came to a close at the historic Canandaigua oval.
Williamson joined heat race winners Peter Britten, Darren Smith and Jimmy Phelps among the top-six qualifiers that re-drew for starting positions in the Modified main. Filing in alongside Phelps to lead off the head 100-lapper, ‘Money Mat’ started third behind front row partners Smith and Britten, and just ahead of Canandaigua regulars Zach Payne and Nick Root on the talent-laden 26-car grid.
Smith jumped out to an early advantage over Britten before the first of eight caution flags flew to reset the field. Todd Root slowed on lap three and Tim McCreadie dropped off the pace with a flat tire when the race resumed on lap seven. A second restart on lap 15 was all Britten needed as the Australian ace bolted high rounding turn two to overtake Smith for the top spot.
Another reported flat for McCreadie on lap 22 and a similar fate for Kasey Coffey on lap 26 once again slowed the pace in the early going as Britten and Smith remained solid out front. Top-10 contenders Alex Payne and Gary Lindberg hooked nerf bars to incur a fifth yellow flag and with 40 laps scored Britten and Smith were chased by Williamson, Zach Payne, Phelps and defending race winner Justin Haers.
After turn three contact between Marcus Dinkins and Alex Payne required caution for Dinkins’ broken down mount, Williamson grabbed second from Smith back under green on lap 47. At the midway mark it was ‘Batman’ flying ahead of Williamson while Smith and Zach Payne diced for third and Haers held off Phelps in a tight top-five battle as 23 cars still remained trackside.
Justin Wright had a tire go down on lap 52 and when racing returned Britten and Williamson continued their relentless run up front. Reeling in the leader as the laps clicked off, Williamson dove low exiting turn two and when the pair came down the homestretch it was Britten pushing his Canadian counterpart across the line as the scoreboard flashed 69 complete.
Yet another flat tire suffered by Tim Fuller forced out the final yellow flag on lap 77, tightening the pack and providing a late-race opportunity to thwart Williamson’s bid for a second GHM title. Yet that never happened as the potent no. 6 S&W Service Centre-Marin Drywall-Becker Bros.Trucking/Bicknell entry ran uncontested to the checkers, authoring a decisive five-second victory at the stripe.
Smith wrestled away the runner-up position from Britten on lap 97 while three-time LOLR points champion Haers outlasted Zach Payne to round out the final front-five. Top race rookie Chris Mackey finished 13th, the last car to complete all 100 laps.
“Really wanted to win tonight, thought last year we had a really good car,” remarked Williamson, who last year held an early lead since lap two before his BRP ride suffered a broken bolt in the rear-end yoke on lap 29 to relinquish the point and eventual win to Haers.
“Obviously when you break you want to see Justin win, and he did, so that was cool. For my guys this is the last race with this car. We didn’t know if it was any good all year. Track had been hit or miss, kept throwing us curve balls. Tonight the track seemed a lot like last year. Awesome week of weather, had a great track and hats off to my guys for giving me a great race car. Been pretty fortunate to win consistently over the last few years, but they don’t come easy,” added Williamson, after his third win of the season pushed his Canandaigua career total to 14, ironically tying him with Tim McCreadie, who made a rare appearance in wine country on Saturday for his LOLR Wall of Fame induction.
Settling for second after another solid September outing in Ontario County, Binghamton traveler Smith easily improved on his 11th (July 2) and 15th-place (Aug. 18) finishes scored in Super DIRTcar Series events staged this summer at the fairgrounds.
“Was just trying to keep hitting my marks, definitely had enough cautions so that kinda helped keep us there,” figured Smith, who placed third both last year and in ‘24 wheeling his black no. 12 Smith Site Development-F.X. Caprara Harley Davidson/Bicknell car, pocketing $3,500 in his best finish to date. “Just want to say thank you to the whole Haers family, this race has been really good to me the last three years.”
The GHM has not been so good for Britten despite matching his third-place finish posted in 2022. Failing to qualify in 2023, the Queensland racer finished 22nd in ‘24 and 23rd the following year.
“The race was definitely a tale of segments for me,” noted Britten, after parking the no. 21A Pepsi-Agway of Ballston Spa-Tommy Faxon Excavation/Bicknell machine on the frontstretch for his rare top-three tally. “Felt really good in the beginning. Could carry a lot of speed through the corners then it seemed like when Matty got by me I started to struggle with some lapped cars and just couldn’t steer where I needed to. Couldn’t carry more speed.”
“Made it work for a little while but right at the end there I was praying for (race) to be over because it was starting to get pretty painful when I saw Justin creeping up and Darren got by me. Was just trying to stop hemorrhaging positions. We obviously had a good car and happy to be here but congrats to those guys, they were just better,” added Britten, who earned $2,500 from the base purse plus thousands more in lap leader and contingency awards.
As mediocre as Britten has been leading up to Haers Memorial Weekend, Comfort has been even less accomplished coming into the 2026 edition. But a pole-position start for the poised Penn Yan pilot spelled doom for the competition as the three-time LOLR Sportsman points champion ran uncontested in a flag-to-flag romp over the area’s top touring DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series contenders.
“That was awesome, probably our last Sportsman race here and to go out the last two races with a win is just incredible,” beamed Comfort, who also won at LOLR on Sept. 5 to finish second in the track point standings. “I spent a lot of time and a lot of laps in Sportsman here.”
“Wow, this car was just flawless, was just unbelievable to drive. Went everywhere and I could just do whatever I wanted,” said Comfort, who won his first LOLR points title in 1999, backed it up in 2000 then again in ‘25, and now ranks tied for third all-time with 30 feature wins at Canandaigua. His fifth career DIRTcar Sportsman Series victory was the second on home soil.
Comfort had his white #10 Steve General Contractor-Millco Woodworking-Honeoye Auto Parts/Bicknell mount dialed in from the start, running second quickest in his time trial group and winning the third of five qualifying heats before drawing the pole to start the 30-lap feature.
The 30-car field took chief starter Scott Hixson’s initial green flag but he quickly swapped it for a red cloth as a multi-car pile-up between the first two corners brought action to an abrupt halt. Knocked out for the remainder with not a single lap scored were Frank Guererri Jr., Matt Guererri, Dave Hackett, Jessica Power and Sydney Wetherbee while Ohio invader Matt Barbour ended upside-down in his maiden voyage to the fairgrounds.
The 35-minutes delay had little effect on Comfort as the open-wheel veteran refired in time to lead the opening circuit when the green lights reappeared. Just as hot from the start was race rookie and series follower Derrick McGrew, with the Ballston Spa driver staying close in the early going.
But after a flat tire by LOLR weekly runner Nick Galusha incurred the lone caution period on lap nine, Comfort would put his hometrack advantage on full display. While Tyler Corcoran and McGrew traded paint lap after lap in his rear-view, Comfort distanced himself as the scoreboard counted down. The lead was over a dozen car-lengths halfway through and by lap 20 had ballooned to a full straightaway with Corcoran and McGrew swapping the second slot while Fulton’’s Hunter Hollenbeck and 15th starting Evan Nugent in a brand-new car filled out the front-five.
Comfort continued to deliver through traffic, growing heavier by lap 24 as the field spread out circling the fast half-miler. The night suddenly came to an end for Corcoran when he pulled to the infield with a broken driveline, once again relinquishing runner-up laurels to McGrew while Hollenbeck inherited third ahead of Nugent and Western New York runner Cameron Tuttle at the finish.
“The whole time I was sitting there I was thinking about scenarios where I could go and how I could get around if I got into lapped cars,” divulged Comfort post-race as he recalled the long red flag wait from lap one. “I knew those guys would be on me on restarts so I made sure I hit (turns) one and two right and it worked out. Can’t believe how well it went tonight. Big thanks tonight to Alex Payne, he sets this car up and it’s just flawless so if you need shocks go see him!”
In a rare appearance at the fairgrounds, McGrew finished a solid second to take home the $100 Rushco / MCS Farms & Feed Rookie of the Race bonus.
“We were decent here, hats off to Karl, think he really had the car to beat tonight,” summed up McGrew, who bested 12 other rookies that qualified for their first GHM Classic. “He started on the pole but even on that one restart I thought I might have a shot at him. Had to hit the top just right in (turns) one and two and hopefully get around him but he was just a little bit better. Overall a decent night, good points night for us, hopefully we can keep this moving forward.”
After finishing 27th in his first Haers Memorial event a year ago, fifth-place starter Hollenbeck was just as happy placing third in the 15-mile main.
“Didn’t really expect to be up here (podium) tonight but we’ll take it,” said a more relieved Hollenbeck, who finished third in points behind Cody Manitta and David Hackett at his home track Fulton Speedway. Manitta finished ninth tonight while Hackett (27th) was an opening lap crash victim.
“Think we had a decent car all night. Had some quick times and just stayed with it. Had a lot of patience here. Don’t know what happened to Tyler, unfortunate for him but happy to end up third because I just don’t run good here,” Hollenbeck added.
The DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series returns to action Fri., Sept. 25, as part of Malta Massive Weekend at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Series points leader Tristan Ladouceur from Alexandria, Ont. finished seventh after starting 16th at LOLR, extending his lead to 72 over recently crowned Canandaigua points king Richard Murtaugh III, who finished 17th. It was three-time feature winner Murtaugh’s first finish outside the Top-10 in 12 races run this season at the fairgrounds.
Heading into round number eight on the DIRTcar Sportsman champ trail in the Capital Disrict, Ladouceur (2,496) and Murtaugh (2,424) lead McGrew (2,402), Nigel Pendykoski (2,327) and Hackett (2,294) on the points chart.
‘T-MAC’ BOOKENDS ‘BAREFOOT BOB’ ON LEGENDARY WALL OF FAME
Still riding on the coattails of his recent induction into the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame in Weedsport, second-generation wheelman Tim McCreadie was recognized Saturday in a special pre-race ceremony as the fourth and final selection to Land Of Legends Raceway’s own Wall of Fame. ‘T-Mac’ joined previous night’s inductee Charlie Donk and the late father/son tandem of John & Scott Schrader in the speedway’s distinguished Class of '26 on this memorable occasion. Finding a rightful perch nearby his father Bob McCreadie, the popular Watertown NY native now accompanies Milt Johnson and his sons Alan & Danny Johnson, and the Schraders as the only two-generation selections currently occupying the wall.
After earning DIRT Motorsports Big-Block Rookie of the Year accolades in 1997, Canandaigua became McCreadie’s first Saturday night Big-Block home during the summer of ‘99, waiting until Aug. 28 to park his own #94 Jreck Subs–Syracuse Frame Service Modified in victory lane. Another win the following season and seventh in the final point standings helped springboard a short-track career on dirt that would ultimately carry him to national acclaim in the new millennium.
T-Mac teamed with car owner John Finch in 2001-02 and racked up seven feature wins at the fairgrounds in the well-funded #56 ride. That success attracted owner Carl Myers with even deeper pockets who lured him into the Sweetners Plus camp in ‘03, a timely switch that led to seven Big-Block wins and a 358-Mod Super DIRT Series triumph steering a pair of potent #39 machines in his final full-season of competition in Canandaigua.
Seeking success on a grander scale, McCreadie went Late Model racing in 2005, wrapping up World of Outlaws rookie of the year honors with nine wins before capturing the overall WoO LM Championship crown in ‘06. A harrowing Midget crash in an early-season Chili Bowl —which he won in 2006— run set the stage for one of his biggest wins, returning to his old stomping grounds in Canandaigua in June of ‘09 to claim the 40-lap WoO LM main.
With 16 victories garnered in three divisions at LOLR, the grassroots oval in Ontario County is among 79 tracks in 29 states and two Canadian provinces where T-Mac has collected checkered flags. Out of more than 200 wins currently chronicled nationwide, his career DIRTcar win total of 92 includes 68 Big-Block victories, 23 of which came in extra-distance Super DIRT Series events. And while logging his lone Big-Block SDS win at the fairgrounds in 2003, McCreadie also owns first-place trophies in the 1999 Rolling Wheels Raceway 200, Orange County Fair Speedway’s 2010 Eastern States 200 and the Super DIRT Week 358-Modified title event held in 2012 at the now defunct Syracuse Mile.
Steering the #9 tribute car of Vince Vitale sporting ImageX Graphics in honor of his father on Saturday, T-Mac won the first of two consis to qualify for his first-ever GHM main before crossing the line 22nd with 68 of the 100 laps complete.
Previous selections are 2018 LOLR WoF charter members Donald 'Dutch' Hoag, Alan Johnson, 'Barefoot' Bob McCreadie and DIRT Motorsports founder Glenn Donnelly, Class of '19 inductees Steve Pesarek, Milt Johnson, Gary Montgomery and Gary & Donna Spaid, '21 honorees Steve Paine, Paul Guererri, Mike Welch and Fred Taney, ‘22 winners Danny Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Tom & Kim Ewing and Brad Ovens, ‘23 drivers Charlie Rudolph, Vic Coffey, Joe Plazek and Darryl Ruggles, ‘24 selections Adam DePuy, Jipp Ortiz, Mike Minutolo Sr., and the Haers Family, along with last year’s group that included Mike Button, Greg Hixson, Chuck Hebing as well as Nancy & Curt Sheradin, with each individual recognized in a timely tribute behind the main grandstands.
FINAL CURTAIN
The final event to officially close out the 63rd season actually goes off after the new year arrives when the annual Land Of Legends Raceway Awards Banquet takes center stage.
