Greg birosh – comes from a high profile racing family in central new york

Pepsi big block Modified competitor Greg Birosh of Penn Yan, NY has been a long time visitor to the Land of Legends Raceway Park. When he started coming to the half mile Ontario County Fairgrounds, some thirty years ago, he had a permanent seat in the grandstands between the flag stand and turn one. Birosh comes from a high profile racing family in the Central New York short track region. His father John built race cars for several local drivers and also won several feature victories as a driver.

Like many of the second generation drivers, Greg wasn’t allowed in the pit area under the age of 14 at the local stock car tracks. Greg drove go-karts until that time, and learned much of what he knows about short track racing from John and Gary Tomkins working in the shop, Tomkins worked for John when the Birosh chassis was in its heyday. John built several different types of race cars, starting with Late Models in the 1970’s. In addition to Modifieds, he also built Sprint cars and even built an pavement Oswego Supermodified. 

“Dad built a little bit of everything,” said Greg, a 46 year old construction estimator, who is still waiting for his first Land Legends Raceway Park Pepsi big block Modified feature victory. “We’ve had our ups and downs this season. We’re still trying to get this thing figured out,” said Greg. 

Greg’s big block Modified career has been off and on since he entered the division in 2013. He started in the Canandaigua Speedway Sportsman division in 2009, where he picked up a feature win before moving up to the Modified class. He didn’t race in 2007, and took his racing talents into the officials tower as an announcer.

“I really liked the announcing, but I wanted to get back into the race car.
